The National Basketball League (NBL) has announced that New Zealand Breakers veteran Phill Jones has won the ‘Accor’ Best Sixth Man for 2008/09. Jones, who came third in voting for the same award last year, took out the honours as the NBL’s best-off-the-bench this season after polling 56 votes. The Breakers survived a serious bout of second-quarter yips to book a semifinal series date with the Melbourne Tigers, eventually riding out a determined challenge from the Adelaide 36ers in a sudden death quarter-final on the North Shore last night. The Breakers face an uphill battle to stay in the hunt for second place in the Aussie NBL after losing by eighteen points to the Melbourne Tigers at home. With both teams fighting for second place on the ladder the first quarter was the closely fought battle that was expected, tied up at 29 all.
