The New Zealand Breakers’ ageless forward Tony Ronaldson has been rewarded for an outstanding contribution in his side’s last two NBL victories by being named Player of the Week for round 14. The New Zealand Breakers overcame a 10-point deficit at halftime to beat Perth Wildcats 118-94 in an Australian National Basketball League (ANBL) match in Perth last night. The Breakers, coming off a 114-70 win over Sydney Spirit, trailed 51-61 after two quarters. The Breakers’ final home NBL basketball game of the year has resulted in a hammering of the cash-strapped Sydney Spirit at Auckland’s North Shore Events Centre. The Breakers endured a difficult first two quarters, leading just 46-41 by half-time. It has been a good news day for the New Zealand Breakers with a major sponsor re-signing and Kiwi NBA veteran Sean Marks declaring that he’s very interested in returning home one day to play for them. Marks, well into the swing of his first season with his fifth NBA team the New Orleans Hornets, told Fairfax Media in a conference call from the States that not only does he follow the fortunes of the Breakers from afar, but that he harbours a desire to one day come back and play for them if possible. ..read more..
Penney and Lemanis win ANBL awards
The New Zealand Breakers guard Kirk Penney has won his second consecutive Australian National Basketball League Player of the Month award, while Breakers mentor Andrej Lemanis has taken out the Coach of the Month honour for November. In seven games for the month of November, Penney averaged 20.9 points, 4.3 rebounds and 2.7 assists. The former NBA player shot the ball at 42% from the field and 42% from three-point range, while connecting on 78% of his free-throw attempts. ..read more..

The Breakers turn in a disappointing shooting display as their winning streak comes to an end against the Crocs. The Breakers have failed in their bid to win seven NBL basketball games on the trot. Wellington Basketball, in conjunction with the Wellington City Council, will run a summer streetball series with former NBL legend and current Junior Tall Blacks coach Kenny McFadden around the Capital during the holiday period. New Zealand NBL in trouble
The current economic climate is having a significant impact on the National Basketball League in New Zealand. The Otago, Canterbury and Hawke’s Bay franchises all failed to pay the initial five thousand dollar start-up fee on Tuesday because of financial issues. NBL board chairman Sam Rossiter-Stead says they’ve given the three franchises until 5pm Friday to confirm their participation in the league. ..read more..

As the first Kiwi to make it to the NBA, Sean Marks has enjoyed a dream career. A former Rangitoto College student on Auckland’s North Shore, Marks became the first New Zealander in the NBA when he was selected 44th overall by the New York Knicks in the 1998 draft.
